Challenging AI Injustice,
Building Ethical Futures
What happens when you put passionate students in a room and ask them to fix AI’s most pressing human problems? I’ve been watching it unfold — and the results are remarkable.

This year, I’ve had the privilege of serving as an Expert Advisor for Hacking4Humanity 2026 — a hackathon tackling one of the most urgent questions of our time. Not “how fast can we build AI?” but something far more important: how do we build powerful AI systems while actually protecting people, communities, and society?
That question might sound obvious. It isn’t. The history of technology is littered with brilliant tools deployed carelessly, optimized for the wrong outcomes, or tested on communities with no seat at the table. Hacking4Humanity exists because someone decided that future technologists need to practice doing it differently — from day one.
Success here isn’t about building something cool. It’s about building something useful, ethical, and grounded in real societal needs.
Why this year’s theme matters
Generative AI adoption is growing at an unprecedented pace worldwide. In boardrooms, classrooms, newsrooms, and healthcare systems — it’s everywhere, and it’s moving faster than our ability to understand its consequences. With that growth comes a new wave of challenges that are simultaneously technical, social, and deeply human.
This year’s hackathon asks participants to confront these challenges head-on, not as abstract research problems, but as real puzzles demanding real solutions:
Bias in AI systems and datasets — the silent inequalities baked into the data we train on, and the models we deploy at scale.
Deepfakes and identity misuse — synthetic media that erodes trust, manipulates truth, and weaponizes people’s likenesses without consent.
Disinformation and online hate — AI-amplified content ecosystems that can fragment communities and inflame conflict at machine speed.
Environmental costs of AI infrastructure — the carbon, water, and energy footprints of the massive compute powering this revolution.
Building healthier digital communities — designing platforms and systems that serve human flourishing, not just engagement metrics.
These aren’t edge cases or theoretical risks. They’re happening right now, at scale, in ways that disproportionately affect the most vulnerable. And that’s precisely why building the habit of responsible innovation early matters so much.

Build fast — but think responsibly
One of the most impressive aspects of Hacking4Humanity is the balance it demands of participants. They must move with urgency — prototypes, proposals, and presentations due by February 18, followed by in-person judging at Duquesne University — while also thinking deeply about real-world consequences.
This is intentional. Responsible innovation isn’t a luxury reserved for slower processes. It’s a discipline, and like any discipline, it needs to be practiced under pressure. Teams work across both technical and policy tracks, developing everything from working applications to concrete policy frameworks aimed at real decision-makers.
Each team must articulate their work across five dimensions — and the requirement to address all five simultaneously is where the real learning happens:
⚙️ What — What does the solution actually do? Clear, honest scope.
💡Why — Why does it matter? What problem is being solved, and for whom?
🤝 Who — Who does it help? Who could it harm? Who was consulted?
🔬 How — How does it technically work? Rigor and transparency matter.
⚖️ Ethics & Risk — What are the ethical risks and unintended consequences? How have they been considered and mitigated?
That last question is the one most hackathons skip. It’s also the one that separates good technology from technology that does good.

Why events like this matter beyond the deadline
Most hackathons are exercises in speed and novelty. There’s nothing wrong with that — building fast is a genuine skill. But Hacking4Humanity is a different kind of training ground. It’s practicing the habits that the technology industry desperately needs to build: asking hard questions before shipping, centering affected communities, and taking seriously the idea that code has consequences.
At a moment when AI capabilities are advancing faster than governance structures can adapt, initiatives like this are cultivating something rare: technologists, policymakers, and researchers who understand that every design decision is, at its core, a human decision.
We’re not just training engineers. We’re training people who know that the question “can we build this?” is always followed by “should we?”
The students participating in this year’s event aren’t waiting to be given permission to work on hard problems. They’re diving in, wrestling with genuine complexity, and producing ideas that could realistically make a difference — in products, in policy, in practice.
Final thoughts
It’s been a genuinely rewarding experience supporting participants as they sharpen their ideas, stress-test their technical approaches, and get ready to defend their work in front of expert judges. I’ve seen thoughtful, careful thinking from teams who are clearly committed to more than just winning. I’m excited to see their final presentations — and more than that, to see where these ideas go after the hackathon ends. The best innovations from events like this don’t stay in the room. They become products, policies, and careers dedicated to getting this right.
